Hannu Kokkonen elected Chairman of the Board of the University of Turku
Hannu Kokkonen, 62, has been elected the new Chairman of the Board of the University of Turku. Sinikka Mönkäre, Managing Director of Finland’s Slot Machine Association RAY, was elected deputy chairman. The Board’s constitutive meeting took place on 20 August.
Hannu Kokkonen has been a member of the University of Turku’s Board since 1 February 2007. He is also a member of the Turku University Foundation’s Board.
- The university is going through a number of reforms due to the new Universities Act, as well as the merger between the University and the School of Economics. The primary task of the new Board is to establish a well-functioning university organisation to achieve stable university operations.
Kokkonen tells us that the first measures to be taken by the Board with regard to drawing up future guidelines for the university are selecting the Rector and approving the new strategy and University Regulation.
The new Board of the University of Turku decided to post the Rector’s position vacant for public application. The current Rector’s period of office will end on 1 January 2010 when the new Universities Act becomes effective and the University of Turku and Turku School of Economics merge to form the new University of Turku. The new Rector’s period of office will extend until 31 July 2014.
