Rector Mika Hannula of Tampere University of Technology Appointed as Director of Technology Campus Turku

​Mika Hannula will be in charge of the new cluster of expertise, the Technology Campus Turku, which was founded in April. It focuses on increasing education and research in technology.

– We aim to promote activities in the field of technology. In Southwest Finland, the field of technology is growing faster than ever, and companies have a great need for employees. Recruiting Hannula is an investment in education and research in technology, and in corporate collaboration, says the Rector of the University of Turku Kalervo Väänänen.

– In Turku, the universities, Turku University of Applied Sciences, the City and business life have determinedly begun to promote the role of technology. I find it fascinating to promote this nationally significant project. It’s great to have the possibility to work at a university with such a historically significant role as the first Finnish-language university, and which will promote the significant development of business life in Southwest Finland, notes Mika Hannula.

Hannula is a Professor of Knowledge Management. He has worked as the Rector of Tampere University of Technology since 2016. Before that, he has had various academic positions in teaching, research and management. In addition, he worked as Chair of Finnish Reserve Officers’ Federation between 2008 and 2013. Hannula is originally from Säkylä in the province of Satakunta.

The Technology Campus Turku includes the City of Turku, the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University, Turku University of Applied Sciences, Novia University of Applied Sciences and Turku Science Park. The aim of the collaboration is to help the higher education institutions in Turku produce more Bachelors and Masters of Science in Technology, engineers, polytechnic Master's degree engineers, and experts in maritime industry for the growing needs in the region.

– Hannula will be in charge of the collaboration which will result in the development of an extensive and multidisciplinary cluster of expertise in technology in Turku. It will support the development of future technologies in the region and thus have an impact on business growth as well, notes Niko Kyynäräinen, CEO of Turku Science Park.

The extensive and multidisciplinary cluster of expertise in technology supports the development of future technologies in the Turku region. The Technology Campus Turku will implement common infrastructures for the support of education and research in technology, and it will optimise the teaching collaboration between institutions in all levels of education. The cluster of expertise maintains a common research strategy which will extensively take into account the needs of research and development in the region.
