University of Turku Hosts a Large International Conference on Evolutionary Biology

The biennial conference of the European Society for Evolutionary Biology is one of the largest conferences in evolutionary biology with approximately 1,400–1,700 participants. The 2019 conference will be organised by the Department of Biology of the University of Turku.

– Turku was chosen as the organiser because we have an active community in evolutionary biology and a good venue for the event. The ESEB conference will bring over 1,400 evolutionary biologists from tens of different countries to Turku and the University of Turku, says Academy Professor Craig Primmer, who is the organiser of the conference.

Convention Manager Sari Ruusumo of the City of Turku helped the researchers of the University of Turku in the application process when they were bidding against Prague and Barcelona. Convention Manager Ruusumo is glad that the congress will be held in Turku.

– Turku is a great place to organise a conference, as you can easily walk everywhere and it is a green and lively city. In addition, the facilities and technology in Logomo meet the needs of a large international congress very well. The news is also positive to the City of Turku, as a large conference of over 1,000 people will bring about €1.8 million in revenue.
