The Number of Master’s Degrees Is on the Increase
The faculties celebrate the new Masters with Graduation Ceremonies. Masters from the Faculty of Humanities gathered at the Old Academy Building in December.

Comparing with 2012, the number of Master’s degrees has increased by a hundred and the University of Turku surpassed its goal of 1600 Master’s degrees, which is the yearly objective of the 2013–2016 agreement period. In 2013, the highest number of degrees was completed in the Faculty of Humanities.

– It is positive that the Faculty of Humanities has clearly succeeded in increasing the number of completed basic degrees in several consecutive years, says Vice Rector Riitta Pyykkö, who is responsible for education.

Pyykkö regards that the determined work at the Turku School of Economics to boost up the quantity of Master’s degrees has been particularly gratifying.

– The work has clearly borne fruit and 75 more Masters graduated in 2013 that in the previous year. When considering the whole university, we have a record result of completed Master’s degrees, if you discount the year 2008 when the degree reformation caused a great spike in the number of graduates, says Pyykkö.

The Number of Doctoral Degrees Surpasses the Objective as Well

Compared with 2012, which was the peak year of Doctoral Degrees, there was a decrease of 20 doctoral degrees, but the University still surpassed its goal of 156 Doctoral Degrees per year, which is the yearly objective of the 2013–2016 agreement period. Most Doctoral Degrees were completed in the Faculty of Medicine, which included one third of all the new Doctors of the University of Turku.

All in all, the numbers are positive. The main funding is allocated according to the three-year average of the completed degrees and the University of Turku has succeeded well in reaching the goals that were agreed with the Ministry of Education and Culture.

However, the advance information is an estimate and there can be small changes in the numbers of the graduates. The final number of completed degrees will be confirmed and compiled into statistics in January.

Estimation of Completed Degrees in the Faculties:

When the final numbers are confirmed, they will be published on the Study Statistics of the University of Turku -page.
