Turku Institute for Advanced Studies (TIAS)

Internationally acknowledged postdoctoral research in the humanities and social sciences

The Turku Institute for Advanced Studies, TIAS, was launched with funding from the Consortium comprising the University of Turku and Turku School of Economics. The goal is to establish TIAS as an integral and permanent part of the University of Turku.

The purpose of the Turku Institute for Advanced Studies is to promote cutting-edge university research in the humanities and social sciences. This includes studies in the arts and literature, business studies, cultural studies, economics, education, human geography, history, law, linguistics, languages, philosophy, political science, psychology, logopedics, social policy, social work, sociology and research methodology, and their equivalents.

TIAS selects its researchers through an international competition, which is open to all researchers in the respective fields. Researchers at TIAS have an ability to work in a research environment of a high international standard. The Board for TIAS selects applicants on the basis of an evaluation by external experts. In the selection process, particular attention is paid to the quality of the candidates’ research proposal. The researchers are appointed for fixed-term positions at the University of Turku or Turku School of Economics. They contribute to the teaching activities at the University of Turku and/or Turku School of Economics. This will comprise five percent of their annual work load of 1600 hours. The TIAS appoints scholars from junior Postdoctoral Researchers to senior Collegium Researchers.

Postdoctoral Researchers: The purpose is to advance the professional competence of researchers who have recently been awarded their doctorates in line with their submitted Research Plan. Applicants should have gained their doctoral degree a maximum of five years before the expiry of the application deadline.

Collegium Researchers: The purpose is to offer researchers an opportunity to develop the competence required for the most demanding research posts or other expert positions after the postdoctoral research stage. The requirements for the post of Collegium Researcher include successful postdoctoral publishing and other scientific work. Researchers are expected to have ambitious research plans aimed at scientific breakthrough.

The positions are funded for 3 years at the time. In the first application round the research appointments will begin on 1 March 2009. The ten candinates nominated as Collegium and Postdoc Researchers in the first application round are found through the link "TIAS nominations".
