The series includes the following subseries:

  • AlI Astronomica-Chemica-Physica-Mathematica
  • AII Biologica-Geographica-Geologica
  • B Humaniora
  • C Scripta Lingua Fennica Edita
  • D Medica-Odontologica
  • E Oeconomica

The A, B, and D series publish research in specific fields in foreign languages, the C series research in all the fields but only in Finnish. Series E is only for dissertation published at the Turku School of Economics.

Acceptance to the Series

All doctoral dissertations with a permission to print from the Faculty Council are accepted to the series. There is no need for an application, delivering a copy of the permission to print to the Publishing Services of the University Library is sufficient.
The copy is sent to the address at the bottom of this page.

Publication Support

The university has an appropriation for the printing expenses of doctoral dissertations. To obtain a grant, contact the office of the faculty or department in question.

The maximum grant for a doctoral dissertation published in the Annales series is 500 euros plus the value-added tax (23 %). If the dissertation is not published in the series, the maximum grant is 350 euros plus VAT (23 %), but no more than the difference between the printing costs and the amount the Doctoral Candidate has received from other sources. Obtaining a grant requires publishing the dissertation online.

The printing invoices are accepted in the disciplines or departments and charged with the sub-item 10003 of the remit. The sub-item has not been allotted a specific appropriation, but the invoices are paid from the budget of the Rector’s office to the sub-item after the invoice has been recorded paid.

The printing process can be initiated as soon as the Faculty Council has granted the permission to print.

The Doctoral Candidate is responsible for possibly proofreading the dissertation and organising the printing . Before printing, the covers, spine text, title page, overleaf of the title page, and the loose leaf of the dissertation must be submitted for approval to the series’ editorial staff, which ensures that the standard information of the series and other bibliographic notes are printed correctly.

The typographical check takes from 2 to 3 workdays, and this should be taken into consideration when planning the printing schedule.

Models of covers and title pages

Layout of the Dissertation

All books published in the series are of size B5. There are no restrictions on the colour of the covers. The serial information must be printed on the cover according to the instructions of the Publishing Services (see above).

Numeric Identification of the Series

When the dissertation is ready for printing, all the serial identification numbers (the serial number, the ISBN number, and the ISSN number) should be requested from the Library Publishing Services. The registration form for the series is available on the Publishing Services website.

The serial number refers to the consecutive numbering of the sub-serial (the number of a part e.g. D 123).

The ISBN number refers to the International Standard Book Number, identifying the publication and its publisher.

Furthermore, each subseries has its individual International Standard Serial Number, the ISSN number, as listed below:

  • A I Astronomica-Chemica-Physica-Mathematica 0082-7002
  • A II Biologica-Geographica-Geologica 0082-6979
  • B Humaniora 0082-6987
  • C Scripta lingua Fennica edita 0082-6995
  • D Medica-Odontologica 0355-9483
  • E Oeconomica

Number of Pages for Bibliographic Information

The title page of the publication is considered page one. The rest of the pages are numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. The pages of the original publications included in a compilation dissertation are also included in the total number of pages.

Blank interleaves are also included, so that the last numbered page is the last page containing text. The following empty page or the overleaf of the last printed page are not included in the number of pages of the publication, and neither are the covers nor the initial empty page.

The introductory pages and the table of contents are also included in the total number of pages. Accordingly, there is no need to number them separately with Roman numerals, as is often done. The resulting number of pages counted this way is marked in the list of publications on the back cover.

Page Numbering

The page number can be placed at the top or at the bottom of the page, in the middle or alternately on the left and right side of the page. When using alternating page numbering, you must make sure that the page number is always on the outer edge of the double-page spread.

If the page numbers are on the top of the page, there is normally no number on the title page. In addition, a page number is never marked on the title page, its overleaf, the dedication page nor on empty pages.
