Fulbright grant programs
The Fulbright Center supports Finnish-American cooperation in educational development. This is why a Fulbright scholarship for an American to come to Finland cannot be granted solely for research projects which do not include lecturing. Grants are offered to all areas of academia. There are certain limitations, however, in the field of Medicine.
Traditional Fulbright Scholar Program
Through the Fulbright Traditional Scholar Program an American researcher may apply for a grant for lectures or for a visit combining lecturing and research at a Finnish higher education institution. A grant is appropriated for one semester (four to five months) or one academic year (nine months). The Finnish host institution will send an invitation to the American lecturer and it must be appended to the Fulbright application.
Funding for lecturing includes a travel grant, health and accident insurance, and housing for the time of the appropriation period. The Fulbright Center is responsible for the monthly grant, travel grant and insurance. The host institution is accountable for housing (see below).
Fulbright-Nokia Grant in Electronics, Information, and Telecommunications Technology
The Fulbright-Nokia Grant in Electronics, Information, and Telecommunications Technology includes a travel grant, health and accident insurance, and housing for the time of the appropriation period of four to nine months.
Fulbright Senior Specialist Program
The Fulbright Senior Specialist programme offers Finnish higher education institutions the possibility to request an American specialist to come to Finland for a period of two to six weeks. An individual specialist can be requested or an individual who has been approved for the Fulbright Senior Specialist Roster can be suggested for selection.
Further information about the abovementioned programs and instructions on sending an invitation is available on the Fulbright Center website.
Housing expenses for Fulbright grant recipients in Turku
If extra funding is needed for the grant recipient's housing, the faculty or department, which invited a visiting researcher/lecturer to the University of Turku through the abovementioned programs, must submit a copy of the invitation to both the faculty concerned and the International Office. The request for an allowance for housing expenses must be submitted to the International Office as soon as the recipient's visit has been confirmed. The same procedure applies to shorter visits (i.e. via the Fulbright Senior Specialist Program): a copy of the application must be submitted to both the faculty and the International Office.
