Wittgenstein, Kant, and the Limits of Conceptual Agreement

Hanne Appelqvist7818lowres (3).jpgThis project investigates the relevance of aesthetic judgment for objective thought. Building on recent research on Kant, Wittgenstein, and aesthetics, the project provides an original and comprehensive account of the Kantian distinction between determining and reflective judgments as it figures in Wittgenstein’s thought. The project will show that, like Kant, Wittgenstein does not see conceptual agreement on the rules of grammar as sufficient for communicability. If the Kantian view to be developed is plausible, a satisfactory account of our cognitive capacities and conceptual norms must incorporate the particular and subjective side of our experience, familiar from the realm of aesthetics.
