Researcher's Turku
An Active City of Science and Culture
Turku offers a historical and international environment for experts in science and technology. As the oldest city in Finland, Turku has been a distributor of science and culture for the entire country ever since the Middle Ages, not least because it is home to the first university in Finland, the Royal Academy of Turku, established in 1640.
Even today, Turku is considered the most European city in Finland. The University of Turku has a prominent role both in the Finnish academic community and in the operations of the City of Turku. Biosciences, one of the university’s areas of strength, is a particular cornerstone in the industrial structure of the city.
The campus, shared by three universities, expands into the very heart of the city. In addition to being a university city, Turku is also a significant city for ports and trade, and an important part of the Stockholm-St. Petersburg axis. Therefore, internationality is a natural, dynamic part of the city’s public image and working culture.
Turku forms a cluster of experts, especially in the fields of biotechnology and ICT. The main export articles of the Turku-based industry are ships, machinery and equipment, and food and beverages, as well as products related to diagnostics and data communication. Respect for entrepreneurship manifests itself in the large number of small and medium-sized enterprises.
