Requirements

The right to study for doctoral degree at the Faculty of Medicine can be applied for by persons who meet the eligibility criteria for pursuing a doctoral degree, as stipulated in the Universities Act (558/2009, Section 37).
 
Prerequisites for pursuing a doctoral degree are written in the study guide (2016-2018) of the DPNurs and in the electronic curriculum (2016-2018) of the Faculty of Medicine: Academic postgraduate degrees.
 
In addition, the right to pursue postgraduate studies aiming at a  doctoral degree in health sciences may be granted by the Faculty to a person who has attained a Bachelor or Masters Degree in health sciences or who has completed a Finnish or a foreign degree on a corresponding level. (Universities Act 558/2009, section 37). The person should have sufficient education and knowledge of research methodology, and the grade received for the major subject of the Master's Degree should be at least "good". If the main subject is not identifiable (e.g. international students), study achievement must be proved by other means.
 
Before applying for the right to study for doctoral degree applicants shall contact Director of DPNurs, Professor Helena Leino-Kilpi (email. helena.leino-kilpi@utu.fi) or some of the directors of research projects at the Department of Nursing Science as early as possible to confirm that the applicant’s research theme ties in with the Department´s research areas (initial contact preferably by e-mail).

Application

The application for the right to study for a doctoral degree consists of an electronic form in English and attached PDF files including all required material according to the instructions.

For the application the applicant must prepare:

  • an abstract of the research plan (max  1000 characters) and
  • the following documents in pdf-format in English:
  1. Research plan (max 5 pages)

  2. Theoretical study plan (see study guide)
    NB! In spring 2018, the Faculty of Medicine is updating the rules concerning the doctoral training due to which there might be changes in the current doctoral training rules, study guide and curricula from August 1, 2018 onwards. Furthermore, the amount of postgraduate studies included in the doctoral degree of Philosophy and in the doctoral degree of Health Sciences may lower from 60 credits to 40 credits. An accepted applicant will study according to the rules coming into effect on August 1, 2018. If the postgraduate study plan has to be updated according to the new rules, it will be instructed separately.

  6. Signed supervision plan (Fill in electronically, print and sign together with the supervisor/-s and the head of subject)

  7. A copy of the Master of Nursing Science degree or equivalent diploma. If the applicant has attained the higher university degree at the University of Turku, the diploma/certificate is not needed as an application enclosure. If the applicant has attained the higher university degree outside Finland the required enclosures are the degree certificate and the transcript of study records.
    NB! Those applicants who have been granted the right to study and who have completed their studies at a university abroad have to submit original or officially certified copies of the degree certificates, other educational documents and the official translations of the documents to the University of Turku by 15 June 2018. (See detailed instructions on the Faculty's www-page)

  8. A copy of the language test result if needed. Please see the language requirements. NB! All language test results must be sent also directly by the test organizer to University of Turku by the application deadline. 

  9. Informal or formal verification of the English skills of the applicant
    A formal verification can be
    - a language test certificate
    -  a degree certificate, diploma supplement, transcript of study records or other official document about higher education degree completed in a university or polytechnic in EU/ETA countries in English. The language of the degree must appear from the document.
    - a degree certificate, diploma supplement, transcript of study records or other official document about higher education degree completed in a university located in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand in English.
    - a degree certificate of the upper secondary education
    completed in the United States, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland or New Zealand in English.

  10. Authorisation form. Applicants who received their previous diploma from the University of Turku do not need to attach the authorization form

  11. When proposing three supervisors, an application and a justification for approval of a third supervisor.


 

Try to avoid the last application submission date (the electronic application system may get jammed on the last day). 

Applications submitted after the deadline will not be processed.

​Checklist

  • Check the application period.
  • Read the instructions of the Faculty and the Doctoral Programme carefully!
  • If you are going to verify your language skills with a language test, make sure that you book your test time well in advance. It is the applicant’s responsibility to make his/her own language test arrangements.
  • Get the required signatures in time and prepare the appendix document.
  • Fill in the electric application form.
  • Remember to apply in time. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be processed.
  • Please keep your original degree certificates and other relevant educational documents at hand during the application process.
