FINDOS Symposium 2017

Dental fear is a common problem. Every third adult Finn report to be as least somewhat afraid of dentistry, and every tenth Finnish adult and child report to be very afraid. Research evidence  shows similar prevalence rates in other countries as well.

The etiology of dental fear is multidimensional. Direct and indirect experiences as well as psychological, possibly also biological factors, contribute to the onset of dental fear. Even though we have rather extensive knowledge on the prevalence we lack information about the etiological factors, especially about those related to dental treatment. Changes in dental fear and the factors behind them are also less well known.
