​In the QS Ranking, the University of Turku was among the top one percent of universities in the world reaching 276th place.  In the QS Rankings by Subject, twelve of the University's fields were ranked at the top, the most successful being nursing science (41st), education (151–200), and medicine (201–250). In addition, the University’s Institute of Dentistry was ranked 18th best in the world in the Shanghai ARWU Ranking. All in all, 16 Subjects from the University of Turku were included in the ARWU Subject Ranking.

The University of Turku made a significant internal investment for the procurement of up-to-date research equipment. Twenty four research equipment procurements received funding, which was over €6 million in total.

In March, the President of the Republic of Finland conferred the honorary title of Academician of Science to Academy Professor Eva-Mari Aro, who is a pioneer in molecular plant biology. The Ministry of Education and Culture granted the Finnish Science Award to Professor Christina Salmivalli. The Finnish Science Award is granted every second year to a Finland-based researcher or research group in recognition of significant scientific achievement.

Open Science

The University of Turku has become a significant player in open science on a national level during the last two years. Of the University’s publications in 2017, 35 percent were parallel published, whereas only three percent of publications were parallel published in 2015.

Competitive Funding

In research, one of the most central follow-up indicators is the amount of competitive research funding. In 2017, the University community attained €48.3 million in competitive funding, which is 2 percent more than in the previous year.

The Academy of Finland granted the University of Turku over two million in funding for strategic research profiling. The decisions highlighted especially the themes related to sea and maritime studies and digital futures. In addition, the University’s research groups are part of three new Centres of Excellence of the Academy of Finland.

A consortium led by Professor of Political Science Maija Setälä from the University of Turku received funding from the Strategic Research Council.

The Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation granted a funding of €1,160,000 to the research group led by Academician of Science, Academy Professor Sirpa Jalkanen. Her group aims to stop the development of metastases by preventing the migration of cancerous cells with new treatments.

ERC Advanced Grants to Olli Raitakari and Craig Primmer. The five-year ERC Advanced Grants are given to established, leading principal investigators who have a track-record of significant research achievements. The ERC Advanced Grants are one of the most competed funding in Europe. Raitakari and Primmer are the first researchers at the University of Turku who have been granted the funding.
