APRES Sub-project

APRES: “Adaptation in Northern Fennoscandia: Local knowledge and adaptive responses addressing regional challenges”

APRES (AdaPtation RESponses) is a joint project between the Nordic Centres of Excellence TUNDRA, involving WPs 6 and 8, and NORD-STAR to review and analyze the importance of various societal and environmental drivers for adaptation to climate and land use change in Northern Fennoscandia. The bridge between TUNDRA and NORD-STAR fosters interdisciplinary research necessary to approach this broad question and extends the collective research base of the respective NCoEs.

The current focus of APRES is lying on bringing administrative-political and ecological scales in congruence, in both spatial and temporal dimensions. As people and nature are closely coupled in a social-ecological system (SES), change in the one element may trigger consequences in the other. Climate change will affect both elements and the way they interact with each other. Where administrative-political and ecological processes are not matched, for example between national and international management priorities and local social and ecological processes, environmental degradation, erosion of traditional livelihoods and the loss of biodiversity may be the outcome. A better understanding of the different conceptions of scale in administrative-political and ecological settings will improve our chances to accomplish sound management of SES.
