Workplace inspection and physical examinations

Workplace inspections

The purpose of the workplace inspection is to assess the general working conditions of the workplace and sort out potential health hazards that could happen on the job. Occupational health care representatives and the labour protection officer will take part in the workplace inspection. Each year, in the approved occupational health care strategy, points will be specified about what kind of clarifications need to be made. Besides these, visits to the work places can be made by the initiation of the head of the department or labour protection officer for checking other points. Workplace inspections include e.g. the check-up and improving of workplaces (e.g. work areas and furniture), tools and working practice as well as the prevention of possible hazardous situations.

Physical examinations

Occupational health care gives so-called statutory physical examinations. These examinations are meant for those employees who work in conditions that may be potentially dangerous or hazardous or if the work imposes special requirements (e.g. laboratory work). Physical examinations are done when the employee first starts his/her new job, if the job  changes substantially or if an illness substantially affects his/her working abilities. For certain jobs, the worker must have a physical examination each year.
