Language requirements in Master's Degree Programmes

All applicants must prove their knowledge of English language when applying for an English-language Master's Degree Programme. Applicants can indicate their language skills by passing an internationally recognised English language test (TOEFL, IELTS, CAE, CPE: approved minimum scores are specified below). In addition to language tests, individual programmes may accept other proof of the applicant's language skills.

NB! If you are planning to apply for a Master's Degree Programme in 2011, you should sign up for the language test now! Please see the information provided by the test organisers at www.ets.org/toefl and www.ielts.org for available testing dates in your country.

Applicants must also see that the test results should reach the University Admissions Finland office by the application deadline. Language tests taken more than two years prior to application will not be accepted.

575 points from the paper-based test
90 points from the internet-based test

Asian Studies

  • Test for the National Certificate of Language Proficiency in English set by the Finnish National Board of Education, an average score of 5.
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree in an English-language programme in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States or in an EU/EEA country.
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree in an EU/EEA country including studies in English AND good proficiency in English in their high school diploma (ylioppilastodistus) or equivalent.


Baltic Sea Region Studies

  • Test for the National Certificate of Language Proficiency in English set by the Finnish National Board of Education, an average score of 5
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree in an English-language programme in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States
  • a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree from English language program in EU/EEA Countries including studies in English language

  • studies (min. 20 ECTS) taken in an English-language programme at the University of Turku

 

Bioinformatics

  • Secondary education in English in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, or the U.S.A.
  • English as the A language (i.e. mother tongue) as a part of IB, or as the LI (i.e. mother tongue), or the LII (i.e. as the official language) as a part of EB.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in English in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, or the U.S.A.

  • A Bachelor's degree from a university in Finland or a polytechnic degree from an ammattikorkeakoulu institution in Finland, if the applicant has demonstrated language skills in the English language according to the requirements concerning foreign language studies in Bachelor's and polytechnic degrees in Finland.

Biomedical Imaging

  • Current and former exchange students of the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University can be exempted from the language test if they have completed at least 20 credits during one term during their exchange, and in that way proven their proficiency in academic English. Current exchange students may also be exempted from the English language test by a writen recommendation of a professor responsible for the Master's Degree Programme.
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree where the language of instruction was English, in a university or a university level institution in one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, USA. These applicants knowledge of English must be indicated in their Bachelor's or Master's degree certificate.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree where the language of instruction was English, in a university or a university level institution in one of the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden). In this case a Diploma Supplement or a statement from the educationaö institution where this information is available should be enclosed with the application.

Embedded Computing

  • Secondary education in English in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, or the U.S.A.
  • English as the A language (i.e. mother tongue) as a part of IB, or as the LI (i.e. mother tongue), or the LII (i.e. as the official language) as a part of EB.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in English in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, or the U.S.A.

European Heritage, Digital Media and the Information Society

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree in English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States. Native English speakers from the above mentioned countries are also exempt from the English proficiency requirement.

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree in the European Union or the European Economic Area if the degree includes at least 4 ECTS of English language studies and they have studied English as a foreign language at secondary school.

Information technology

  • Secondary education in English in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, or the U.S.A.
  • English as the A language (i.e. mother tongue) as a part of IB, or as the LI (i.e. mother tongue), or the LII (i.e. as the official language) as a part of EB.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in English in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, or the U.S.A.

  • Secondary education in English in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, or the U.S.A.
