Exchange Programmes at the University of Turku

 

The University of Turku is partner with over 300 universities and is a partner in several networks. If your home university has a bilateral agreement or is a member in one of our educational networks you are able to apply as an exchange student.

However, you will need a nomination from your home university or scholarship authority before you can apply. Please also notice that some programmes have their own application prodedures, applications and deadlines of which you will find more information by following the link.

Erasmus

The Erasmus exchange programme is meant for European higher education students. In order to apply to the University of Turku as Erasmus student you must study in one of our Erasmus partner universities.

Erasmus Placement

In Erasmus Work Placement a student willing to go on a work placement find their own host organisation. The hosting organization must be located within an EU or ETA/EFTA country. Different public or private bodies and enterprises qualify as hosts. This Programme is hosted by the Academic Career Services. Most of the students with the Erasmus Placement status do not have a student status at the University of Turku!

 

Bilateral agreements

In addition to the exchange programmes, the University of Turku has several bilateral agreements with universities around the world. Please check with your own coordinator first about the details and conditions of the agreement.

 

Nordplus

Nordplus is an exchange programme between Nordic and Baltic countries: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Finland plus Faroe Islands, Greenland, Åland and Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

 

Erasmus Mundus Action 2

The University of Turku (UTU) is involved in six Erasmus Mundus Action 2 (EMA2) mobility projects together with 27 EU partner universities. These projects promote the mobility of students, researchers and academic staff between the partner universities in the EU and in the countries outside EU (= Third Countries).

Triple I

The Triple I (Integration, Interaction and Institutions) project aims at creating an active network of Russian and European institutions of higher education. The programme is for Russian students and staff applying to European institutions and Europeans applying to Russian institutions. The University of Turku is the Coordinator and there are 19 partners in this project.

BMU

The BMU (Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine) project offers grants from Belarusian, Moldovan and Ukrainian universities to EU-partner universities and vice versa. The project is coordinated by the Universidad de Deusto (Bilbao, Spain) and the University of Turku is one of the 19 partners of the project.

CENTAURI

The CENTAURI (Central Asian Universities in need of Research and Innovation) programme offers grants for mobility from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The Coordinator of the project is Universidad Santiago de Compostela and the University of Turku is one of the 20 partners.

JoinEU-SEE

The JoinEU-SEE project, funded by the European Commission is coordinated by the University of Graz. University of Turku is one of the 20 partners in this project. The grants are meant for the mobility from and to Western Balkan Universities.

EXPERTS

The EXPERTS (Exchange by Promoting Quality Education, Research and Training in South & South-East Asia) project offers grants for mobility from Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, The Philippines, and Thailand. The Coordinator of the project is Georg-August Universität Göttingen and the University of Turku is one of the 20 partner universities.

MAHEVA

The MAHEVA (Man Health Environment Biodiversity in Asia)  project offers grants for mobility from Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. The Coordinator of the project is Université Montpellier 2 Sciences et Techniques and the University of Turku is one of the 18 partner universities.

 

FIRST

The Finnish-Russian Student Exchange Programme (FIRST) is meant for Russian students (up to Master level) from our network partner universities .

 

north2north

The north2north programme is organized by the University of Arctic and is meant for the students of the circumpolar countries who want to study in another Northern institution (Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, United States, Canada).

 If your home university is part of the University of Arctic Network, it might be possible to apply as an exchange student (not with n2n-status).

 

North-South-South

FINPE (Finland-Peru) The North-South-South Higher Education Institution Network Programme is financed by the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and it aims at creating lasting relationships between Finnish institutions of higher education and those of the Developing World. The University of Turku has exchange with two Peruvian institutions.

North-South-South: Sustainable Development and Human Rights Network Project
The Project is based on cooperation between three universities in Turku/Åbo and four universities in Africa. It is coordinated by Åbo Akademi University.

 

ISEP

The International Student Exchange Program ISEP is an American reciprocal programme. In addition to the United States, the programme includes universities from Canada, South Korea, Japan, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Nicaragua and Uruguay. Both ISEP and International-International placements are available. However, you cannot apply to the University of Turku before being nominated by your home institution.

 

Coimbra Group Student Exchange Programme

The Coimbra Group is an association of 39 old European universities committed to create academic and cultural ties between the countries. The exchange programme is meant for the students of these universities. See the list of the participating institutions.

Coimbra Group Scholarship Programme for Young Professors and Researchers from Latin American Universities

The grant covers accommodation and other living costs. The researcher is able to apply for all the fields of study available in the University of Turku and the duration of stay is 1-3 months. The researcher must also get approval by their supervisor/host in Turku before applying. More information

Coimbra Group Scholarship Programme for young African researchers

The grant covers accommodation and other living costs. The researcher is able to apply for all the fields of study available in the University of Turku and the duration of stay is 1-3 months. The researcher must also get approval by their supervisor/host in Turku before applying. More information

Coimbra Group Hospitality Scheme

The scheme offers short-term visits to young scholars from countries of South-Eastern Europe (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia,  Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia) and Georgia and Ukraine. The receiving institution offers accommodation and some other living costs. More information

 

Fulbright - University of Turku Graduate Award

The Fulbright - University of Turku Graduate Award is aimed for an Americans for studying or research at master or doctoral level at the University of Turku for one academic year. Also post doctorate placements are available for those finalizing their thesis before commencing the grant period.

There are also other possibilities within the Fulbright Programme.

 

CIMO Fellowships

The CIMO Fellowships programme is open to young researchers (after Master level but not post doctorate) from all countries and from all academic fields. The prerequisite for applying is that the visiting researcher must have established contacts with the Finnish host university. The Finnish university department wishing to host him or her applies to CIMO for the grant.
