University of Turku
The Royal Academy of Turku was founded in the year 1640 as the first university in Finland. It created a strong, dynamic and innovative foundation for the academic tradition which still prevails in the atmosphere of the university. The University of Turku was founded in 1920 as the first entirely Finnish-language university of the country. Today, the university is a highly international university where education and research are closely intertwined. The university offers academic education based on high quality and often multi-disciplinary research. University of Turku is a member of the Coimbra Group, a network of prestigious universities in Europe and is coordinating the Baltic Sea Region University Network (BSRUN).
As one of the leading universities in Finland, the university offers study and research opportunities in seven faculties: Humanities, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Medicine, Law, Social Sciences, Education and the Turku School of Economics. Biosciences, research of processes related to the interaction of culture and society, mathematical research, research of learning and education and astronomy and space research are amongst the strongest and most reputable areas of study.
Even though the main language of instruction is Finnish, each faculty offers study opportunities in English. Total enrolment of students is almost 21,000 (2009) and each year more than 1,000 international students study at the university, most of them in English-language programmes or in research projects at the Doctoral level.
University of Turku and the Turku School of Economics merged in the beginning of 2010.
