Mobility grants for scholars and students from 30 countries to the University of Turku

The University of Turku (UTU) is involved in six Erasmus Mundus Action 2 (EMA2) mobility projects together with 27 EU partner universities. These projects promote the mobility of students, researchers and academic staff between the partner universities in the EU and in the countries outside EU (= Third Countries). The EMA2 projects at UTU cover following Third Countries in different geographical regions, called Lots in the EU guidelines:

  • Lot 6: Russia
  • Lot 8: Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine
  • Lot 9 (2010): Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan (no further calls)
  • Lot 10: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, FYR of Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia
  • Lot 11: Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Indonesia, Nepal,  Pakistan, The Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand
  • Lot 12( 2010): Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, The Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam (no further calls)

In each Lot there are 10-13 partner universities from the Thrid Countries concerned, and 6-10 partners from the EU countries.

The total budget of the six EMA2 projects accepted in 2010 is over 20 million EUR offering 1,122 mobility grants for students and scholars. Most of them will be for applicants from partner universities in the Third Countries to 28 EU partner universities, of which UTU is one of the choices for the applicants.

In most Lots there are other projects which offer same opportunities for Third Country students and scholars. For information about all Eramus Mundus projects funded by the European Union, see results of the Selection 2011.

Who can apply

The mobility grants are at undergraduate, master, doctorate and post-doctorate level. These grants are for students and scholars of all partner universities (in total 65), as well as for nationals of the Third Countries of each Lot concerned.  In addition there are some grants for staff visits between the partner universities. The length of the grant varies depending on the purpose of the visit (from one semester to 34 months). In staff visits, the grant in most Lots is for only one month.

In lot 12 (see below) the mobility grants are for applicants from Third Countries to EU partner universities only.

In other Lots there are grants for applicants from EU partner universities for visits to partner universities in the Third Countries, e.g. students, researchers and staff members at UTU can apply for these grants.

How to apply

Every project will have an online application system. Application deadlines vary. According to the EU guidelines, the student mobilities which are already deciced on must start in December 2011 at the latest, however some projects may have an earlier date. There is more flexibility concerning staff visits.

During the next application rounds exchange students at undergraduate and master levels are encouraged to apply for studies starting in autumn 2012.

Degree studies:  Prior to applying, all applicants interested in degree studies should contact the host university in question. In most partner universities, the applicant will not be enrolled in a degree programme unless s/he has applied for and received the right to study at the university. Degree students may have started their studies in the host university in autumn 2011 but the grant period can start earliest in late Spring 2012 (this possibility varies according to the Lot).
