A checklist of the things you should take care of before arriving:

  • You will receive an Information Package of the University of Turku which will include a Letter of Acceptance, Learning Agreement and information about studying at UTU.

  • Information about your student tutor will be sent to you by email. Please be in touch with your tutor and inform her/him about your arrival details.

  • If you are a non-EU/EEA citizen, you will most likely need to apply for a Residence Permit before arrival in Finland. EU/EEA citizens can apply for student residency at the local police station within 3 months after arriving in Finland.

  • All students should obtain a Finnish personal ID Code either when applying for residence permit or when in Turku.

  • Remember to apply for housing in time!! Usually it should be dine at least 6 weeks before your exchange starts.

  • Book your travel tickets

  • You can join our Student Union - the membership is voluntary but highly recommended. The membership gives you significant benefits like student health care and discounts (excluding PhD students). You will get information and payment instructions by email before your arrival to Turku.

  • If you join the Student Union you can get a Starting Package which includes daily necessities like a pillow and blanket, cutlery and so on.

  • Arrive in time for the Orientation which is organised at the beginning of each semester (end of August, beginning of January).

  • Non-EU/EEA citizens are required to have health insurance before arrival. It is advisable to purchase a travel insurance as well.

  • Make preparations for money transfers. In Finland most of the invoices (e.g. your rent) can be only paid with bank transfer.  For students coming from EU/EAA countries we recommend arranging online banking possibility for your own domestic account. With the SEPA (Single Europe Payment Area) the money transfers should be fast and easy. Opening a bank account in Finland is somewhat bureaucratic.

We are looking forward to meeting you in Turku!
