Tutoring for New Master’s Degree Programme Students
As a tutor you’ll have an opportunity to help new international students to settle in a student life in Turku, share your experiences and learn about new cultures. You will also help the student with all kinds of practical matters upon his/her arrival.
Application period
The application period for international tutors ends at 31.3.2011. Return the application form personally to your faculty office.
Selection of international tutors
You can be a tutor if you are currently enrolled in a degree programme at the University of Turku and want to help new international students to integrate into the student life in Finland. To become a tutor, you’ll have to participate in the training and be prepared to work with your tutoring pair at the beginning of the semester when the students arrive. The international tutors will be informed of the selection by e-mail as soon as possible. The exact number of new students in the Master’s degree programmes will be known in the beginning of August.
Training
The training organised by Student Services takes place on April 28. Participating is obligatory for all tutors.
International tutors are advised to participate also in the training organised by faculties to the tutors of new Finnish degree students. Please note that the training by the faculties is organised in Finnish. Please contact your faculty office for more information.
Tutor’s duties
• Contact the student before arrival
• Check that the student has applied for housing and paid the security deposit
• Collect the key to his/her apartment before arrival
• Meet the student at the airport or train/bus station when s/he arrives
• Help with all kinds of practical matters e.g.:
- Signing the lease
- Opening a bank account
- Paying the student union fee and ordering the LYYRA student card
- Helping with registration at the register office
- Getting a bus card from the Public transport office
• Show the most important places at the university (libraries, lecture halls, Computing Centre, student cafeterias, FSHS…) and in the city (shops, libraries, flea markets…)
• Tell about student life and free time activities in Turku and introduce the student to different student organizations
It is possible for international tutor to work together with a Finnish tutor as a tutoring pair. The pairs will be introduced and the roles and tasks of each tutor will be defined on the training.

Master’s degree programmes
Practical information
New international degree students are expected to arrive in Turku on August 31. The orientation course takes place on September 2 (Turku School of Economics arranges an orientation course on 24-25 August).
Tutors fulfilled the required duties will be paid a fee.
