Health insurance required for studies in Finland

According to the Immigration Department of the Ministry of the Interior, students coming to Finland from non-EU/EEA countries must have valid health insurance.

Citizens of non-EU/EEA countries arriving in Finland for the purpose of studies or student exchange after and including 1 September 2007 are required to have health insurance. This directive is required if the studies or student exchange lasts for more than three months. The directive is not applied if citizens of non-EU/EEA countries have their residency documents set before 1 September 2007.

Health insurance is required for student residence

Foreign students must have a health insurance policy that covers the costs of medical care (up to €100,000). If the duration of studies is at least two years, it is sufficient that the insurance policy covers pharmaceutical costs (up to €30,000). The health insurance must be in force upon entry into Finland and the policy must be issued by a reliable and financially sound company or institution.
