Health services for students who are not members of the Student Union

For those students who are not members of a student union, health care is handled by the Turku Municipal Health Department. The Turku Municipal Health Department (Kunnallissairaalantie 20, tel. 10023, calling on a mobile phone and outside the Turku area (0)2 251 1008 or (0)2 231 4543) will determine which health care unit you must contact because the facility you go to depends on the district code of your address. The nurses give advice on phone 24 hours, at number (0)2 10023.   For example, if you live at the Student Village, you are able to see a doctor at Kirkkotie 13 (where FSHS is also located). You can also call the abovementioned numbers regarding health care advise as well as other questions. Also be prepared, when going to the doctor, to bring all forms of identification including proof of your Finnish address and your admission at the University of Turku.

A visit with a health care professional at a health care unit will cost €13,70* each time for the first three visits of the calendar year for minor illness and health issues. After the third visit, doctor visits for that calendar year are free of charge.  Please note that these visits are initial doctor visits and that if there are any special treatments thereafter, it will cost more. Injuries, such as surgery, are also special issues that lead to higher cost. Also, appointments with a private doctor or specialist outside of municipal health centres will cost a great deal higher. In the event of an emergency situation after 20.00 in the evening and on weekends (päivystys), a fee of €18,80 is charged. You can get all medical fees from the City of Turku webpages (in Finnish and partially in English).

Citizens of non-EU/EEA countries arriving in Finland for the purpose of study or student exchange after and including 1 September 2007 are required to have health insurance, if the study or student exchange lasts for more than three months.

* Fees and policies are subject to change. The University of Turku is not responsible for for hospital and doctors' fees.
