Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS)

During their studies, students can turn to Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) concerning questions of health and illness. The foundation offers health care and medical treatment, mental health work as well as oral health care services of the university and other higher education institution students. In addition to seeing patients, FSHS does versatile work for the promotion of students' well-being.

A basic degree student has the right to use FSHS services after having paid the Student Union membership fee. Student unions are responsible for each of its members' insurance-type health care payment. All basic degree students, as well as exchange students who are student union members, may use the health services of FSHS. The services of FSHS are not available for postgraduate students.

First-year students are requested to go to a free of charge physical examination. The first FSHS oral care check-up is always free of charge regardless of the point or duration in the student's Bachelor's or Master's degree studies.

Contact information, opening hours and fees can be found on the homepage of the foundation at www.fshs.fi . There is a useful Health Issues databank on the homepage which has a wide selection of articles pertaining to the medical questions of students-aged adults. Through Health Counseling-Net Service students can send their questions to health care experts.

When going to see a health care professional, the student card or certification of attendance must be brought along. Students who cannot make it to see a doctor must remember to cancel their appointment.

University Sports

The University of Turku sports facilities offers its university community (full-time students, postgraduate, visiting and exchange students, staff), including Turku School of Economics, versatile sports services focusing on fitness and health. The Sports Coordinators at the University Sports Office are responsible for planning and coordinating sports services for both students and staff. University Sports includes both indoor and outdoor activities. The majority of sports activities are carried out at the Educarium sports facilities and Sport Henrik as well as the Iskeri sports hall adjacent to the Student Houses.

University sports services are continuously being developed and diversified. In the recent years, the aim has been to focus more and more on exercise with an emphasis on health. Approximately 3,500 university members use the University Sports facilities weekly.

You can find information about these activities in the University Sports calendar printed once a semester, on the Internet (www.utu.fi/en/universitysports and www.utu.fi/yliopistoliikunta), on the sports notice boards at Educarium, Sport Henrik and Iskeri as well as notices in Turku Student Newspaper.

You may attend different classes, use the gym and take part in the games of various groups free of charge at the beginning of each semester for two weeks. After this you will be required to pay the University Sports fee.

The sports fee entitles you to use the university's sports facilities and equipment and to participate in classes indicated in the sports programme that do not require a separate fee. Paying for badminton and participation in Sammonmalja floorball games do not require payment of the sports fee.

Student accidents

In order for a student to be compensated for an accident, it must be shown that:

  • the accident occurred during practical teaching, work training or equivalent, which is in accordance with the regular curriculum. An example of practical teaching would be laboratory teaching or physical education at the Department of Teacher Education.
  • the accident occurd while commuting from the educational institution or student's residence to the place of internship, job training or working life outside the educational institution or vice versa
  • an illness occurred from the job included in the aforementioned study-related, work-equivalent practical teaching

A student who is being paid for work training is covered by the accident insurance of the employer.

Accidents that happen while commuting to or from the university are not compensated. The same applies for accidents that happen during lectures.

In case of an accident, the student must immediately turn to the teaching staff of the department. The teacher responsible for the course or training will help in filling out and then sign an accident report. The form is then taken to staff administration at the Rector's Office.

For more information on accidents, compensation etc., contact Ms Tuija Heikkilä, tel. 333 6180 at the Rector's Office as well as the State Treasury website www.valtiokonttori.fi.

Accident forms are available at the department offices and the State Treasury website.
