The Student Union of the University of Turku (TYY)
The Student Union of the University of Turku (TYY, Turun yliopiston ylioppilaskunta) is a public corporation completely independent of the University of Turku. The role of TYY is to represent its members, to advance the position of students in society and provide them with services ranging from consultations with lawyers to parties and sports opportunities.
Membership in the Student Union
Membership in a student union is by law compulsory for all Finnish Bachelor's and Master's degree students and voluntary for postgraduate students. Membership of the Student Union is also open to formal exchange students of the University of Turku if they have currently registered for a degree with a university outside Finland, or if they receive a scholarship through the Finnish Ministry of Education or through the Centre for International Mobility (CIMO).
Membership fees
The membership fee for the Academic Year 2012-2013 for both lower degree students and exchange students is 91.00 € and for postgraduate students (PhD) the fee is 34.00 €.
You may pay half the membership fee (autumn 2012 or spring 2013) if:
- You are an exchange student who has been accepted to study for only one semester
- You are a degree student and are planning to be registered as non-attending for one of the semesters
For bachelor and master level students the fee for one semester is 45.50 € and for PhD level students 17.00 €
TYY grants an exemption from the membership fee to exchange students who come by bilateral agreement from University of New South Wales (UNSW) or University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and have paid another student union's compulsory membership fee for the current year.
