The herbarium maintains and collects scientific plant, fungal, moss, lichen and algal collections. There are currently more than a million specimens from all over the world, from Finland to the tropicsand even from Antarctica. Apart from being used in research, the collections are also used in teaching and public decision-making. The herbarium also offers services for the identification of specimens ranging from house fungi to plant remnants.

The Herbarium is part of the Biodiversity Unit of the University of Turku, together with the Zoological Museum, Aerobiology Unit, Botanical Garden, Kevo Subarctic Research Institute and the Archipelago Research Institute.
