​The Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, ICTA (www.uab.cat/icta) is part of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), a public university located close to Barcelona city with more than 50000 students (among whom more than 11000 are graduate students) and about 3000 professors and researchers. ICTA was created in 2003, inheriting the expertise of a previous Environmental Studies Centre, it aims to promote interdisciplinary research and training in the area of environmental sciences and technology. ICTA has a strong expertise in multidisciplinary research between the natural and the social sciences and collaborative work.

Mario Giampietro is ICREA Research Professor at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). He is an expert in energy analysis and integrated assessment of sustainability issues, and the ‘father’ of the innovative scientific approach, Multi-Scale Integrated Analysis of Societal and Ecosystem Metabolism (MuSIASEM). He has more than 150 scientific publications and is author of several books.

Alev is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). She holds a PhD from the same institute. Her area of focus is on the energy metabolism of societies applying the specific approach of the Multi Scale Integrated Assessment of Societal and Ecosystem Metabolism (MuSIASEM). She has collaborated in several international and European projects applying the MuSIASEM framework to different cases. Alev holds a BSc degree in Environmental Engineering from the Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey (with a period spent abroad at Rice University, Houston, Texas, USA) and an MSc degree in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science from Lund University, Sweden.

Raúl Velasco-Fernández

Raúl Velasco-Fernández is pursuing a PhD in Environmental Science and Technology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) with the IASTE research group (Integrated Assessment: Sociology, Technology and the Environment). His research focuses on the study of Societal Metabolism and in particular the energy use of the EU industrial sectors. He holds a Master's degree in Environmental Studies (major in Ecological Economics and Environmental Management) from the UAB (2012), a BA degree in Sociology from the University of Barcelona (UB, 2012), and a BSc degree in Industrial Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC, 2008 ).
