Matti Minkkinen is preparing a PhD on futures of privacy protection in the European context. Privacy is a significant challenge of the future because global flows of personal data are rapidly increasing. His dissertation investigates how privacy rules are changed by actors in a future-oriented manner and outlines pathways to future privacy after the data flood. The consultation process of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation is used as a case study of institutional change in privacy protection. Matti is also researching foresight processes related to comprehensive security in Finland in the project “From Failand to Winland”, funded by the Strategic Research Council.

Matti was the first graduate from the current Master's Degree Programme in Futures Studies. His research interests cover qualitative futures research methodology, the concept of futures consciousness and the futures of privacy and security in the digital revolution. Matti teaches master's level courses on ethics of futures studies and futures research methods in practice and has given talks on scenario methodology and causal layered analysis, among other topics.
