Musicology studies different music genres as cultural practices while reflecting on their meanings and broader significance. At the same time the discipline develops methods for the study of music and other sonic phenomena. The main profile of the Department of Musicology at the University of Turku is cultural musicology. Musical practices of interest in our field include classical music, the various forms of popular music and folk music, film music, sound art and music in daily life, including soundscape studies. Musicology training equips students with the requisite set of skills to produce new knowledge on sounding cultures. The trained musicologist possesses a diverse range of skills, and, in general, musicology graduates have found employment in jobs spanning culture and the arts.
