The Sociology of Law and Criminology

The sociology of law consists of various approaches to the study of law in society. The emphasis in teaching is in demonstrating the possibilities of empirical research into the interaction and relationships between law, legal institutions, and society. The sociology of law scrutinizes the methods of gathering and analysing data in empirical socio-legal research. Also addressed are the contemporary theories on the relationships between law and society. Criminology is a multidisciplinary field addressing criminality with a focus on questions such as prevalence, etiology, and the control of crime.

The sociology of law and criminology offers students the possibility of studying in international programs. Students in advanced studies are also advised to take courses offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences or the Turku School of Economics, in particular on qualitative or quantitative research methodology
