Centre for East Asian Studies (CEAS)

As the first and only academic centre in Finland devoted to the study of contemporary East Asia, the Centre for East Asian Studies (CEAS) conducts original research and offers multidisciplinary teaching on the region. The Centre also coordinates the Finnish University Network for Asian Studies.

The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Turku has been offering courses on East Asia for over forty years. Building on this tradition, the Centre for East Asian Studies was established in 2006 to mark the university’s strategic orientation towards East Asia. The Centre’s Master's and Doctoral Degree Programmes in East Asian Studies invite applicants from all over the world.

CEAS’ mission is to develop and strengthen East Asian Studies in Finland through conducting high-quality research on East Asian societies, training first-class researchers on the region and providing popular research-based knowledge on East Asia in Finland and internationally.

In addition, CEAS coordinates a key institution for Asian studies in Finland: the Finnish University Network for Asian Studies (Asianet), serving around 500 students annually. This responsibility puts CEAS in a leading position in the teaching of Asian studies in Finland. Currently the Centre has about 10 staff members actively teaching and researching on contemporary China, Japan and Korea.
