Accounting and finance forms a system and a language that is used within the company to communicate, to steer the company, to harmonize goals and to report the operational results to stakeholders.

Accounting and finance covers the creation and development of measurement systems that illustrate corporate functions, gathering of information required by these systems and molding the data into useful information about the company. This generated information is used not only by the accounting professionals who generated it but also for example analysts, investors and corporate managers in decision making.

The information generated by accounting and finance is mostly monetary but accounting and finance is also covering increasing amounts of non-monetary measurement and reporting.

The teaching of accounting and finance in Turku School of Economics is international:

Why studying accounting and finance?

The information provided by accounting and finance plays an important role in the company's operational management, decision making and in communication with external parties. Accounting and finance forms a basis for these functions, a system and a language that everyone working within the company must be able to understand. A student that has a Master's degree in accounting and finance can work for example in demanding financial management positions, as a corporate analyst, as a certified auditor etc. Accounting and finance measures, analyzes and generates reports about a whole corporate entity. This gives the students who have studied accounting and finance an excellent and broad basis to work even in the highest general management positions. On the other hand knowledge about accounting and finance is useful in every job position. The aim of studies in accounting and finance is to ensure that after graduation the students have the ability to parse and analyze the company's economical and financial issues and to present alternative solutions to these issues. After graduation students will be able to make individual financial decisions about the company.

Accounting and finance is a typical subject within economic studies in university. The areas of accounting and finance are not taught or researched in such detail elsewhere. Within working life the knowledge about accounting and finance is commonly expected from students graduating with MSc in economics.
