Before the disputation

  • The Doctoral Candidate can inquire about an appropriate time for the disputation from the chairperson (referred to as the custos in Finnish Universities) and the opponent. Two public examinations of the same faculty (or of the same department in the Faculty of Medicine) should not be organised at the same time. It is also not recommended to organise public examinations during public holidays.
Halls for the public examinations can be reserved by sending an e-mail to luentosalivaraukset@utu.fi
  • The doctoral candidate is responsible for the publication and distribution of the dissertation. The dissertation can be published in the University's own Annales series, or by an outside publisher. The University recommends dissertations to be published digitally in the online publication archive publications.utu.fi. Digital (pdf) dissertations must be delivered to the main library 15 days before the disputation. If the dissertation is to be published in printed form also, the printed copies must be delivered to the university at least 10 days before the disputation. The amount of copies to be distributed is defined here.
  • Make preparations for a reception with coffee or sparkling wine after the disputation.
  • The possible post-doctoral celebration requires arrangements of its own: invitations, a venue, serving, the programme, the thank-you speech to the opponent, etc.
  • Agree with the custos and the opponent about clothing. If the opponent is not Finnish, send him/her and English version of the disputation procedures and a summary of the lectio praecursoria. The opponent may need assistance with travel arrangements.
  • The faculties have their own instructions in addition to these general guidelines. Contact the faculty in question for further information.
  • Deliver the announcement of the public examination of the dissertation, a one-page text to serve as a basis for writing the press release, and a photograph to the Communications Unit.
