The overwhelming effect of AI took most of us by surprise when ChatGPT was released in November 2022. Like the rest of the world, we had to think overnight how best to use it and start to process how it could affect our teaching, our students and how we manage and assess the work they do when learning languages and communication. In order to make sense of this new situation, in Kievi we have spent a lot of time and effort to train, educate and assist our teachers through a variety of methods.
What we have done
🔍📜 Overview of AI guidelines: First, we analyzed the emerging guidelines from universities across Finland on how AI was recommended to be used in teaching and research. We looked at guidelines from eight higher education institutions (universities and Universities of Applied Sciences). Some of them provided practical ideas; for example, Åbo Akademi gave a list of assessment forms and assignments that would be difficult for AI to help with, but there was a general lack of this kind of help in the guidelines overall.
👥🧑🎓 Training sessions: Since that time, we have consistently held training sessions related to using AI in teaching. For example, we held a session in collaboration with LUT university of applied sciences on key AI guidelines, we have held a workshop on integrating AI into teaching and spent time looking into some of the latest literature AI and assessment, and our own teachers (Bolster & Levrai 2024) have published recently on this issue. The latest session on AI looked at a tool, NotebookLM, that creates a podcast from a text or up to five texts.
📼🤓 Self-help videos: One easy way to help teachers is to provide short instructional videos of the latest AI tools. Much of the world's focus has been on ChatGPT, but there is an abundance of other tools that are available to help teachers and researchers. Examples of these videos we have created are for SciSpace, a tool for research and Twee, a tool that creates lessons from YouTube videos and texts. We also took out subscriptions for staff to use Kwizie, a Finnish company that allows the user to instantly create quizzes based on videos. All our AI-related resources and conversations are stored in a dedicated Teams channel and our Digipeda Moodle pages.
🤖🕵 Using AI in teaching – dealing with cheating
There has been a consistent increase in the number of cases of cheating using AI in the university. This has sometimes been intentional, but also accidental, as students on the one hand are encouraged to use AI, and on the other not allowed to use it in certain circumstances. It therefore, very important that teachers give a clear and simple message to students about when and how they can use AI, especially in assignments that are used for assessment purposes. To help with this, we have adopted the Arene traffic light system created by the Universities of Applied Sciences. A further way to help create clarity is to have students state at the beginning of an assignment how they have used AI using a pre-prepared template. In this way, they actively declare their usage, rather than passively reading or listening (or not) to instructions.
