All books on loan and exam approaching - what do I do?!

07.10.2024

When all the course books are on loan and the exam is approaching, good advice is needed. Here is something you can do before the exam.

1. Make a reservation for the book

  • When all the books are on loan, make a reservation in the Volter database and you will get it as soon as it is returned. You will be notified about the returned book by e-mail when the book can be picked up from the library.

2. Check the e-books of the University of Turku Library

  • Check the Volter database properly and see if the book could be read in the net. Some of the e-books can be returned at any time, so it is worth checking the e-version every now and then.

3. Borrow a night or weekend copy from the Turku University Library

  • Many of the course books have a night and weekend copy in the library, which you can borrow for one night or weekend. You can borrow the night and weekend copy no earlier than three hours before the library closes. There is more information about this on the library's website.

4. Copy or scan the night or weekend copy

  • Often there is a night and weekend copy of the course book in the library that you can copy or scan for yourself for private use. This is an authorized use under the Copyright Act.

5. Check if other higher university libraries in Turku have the book

  • Åbo Akademi University Library and Turku University of Applied Sciences Library are at your disposal: you can register yourself as a customer just be visiting each library. Remember to carry your ID with you. The libraries of all other Finnish higher education institutions are at your disposal, too. You can check the availability of the book from the Finna search service.

6. Use also the Finnish public libraries

  • In Finland, most libraries are open to everyone and library cards are usually available immediately. You can suggest a course book to purchase for your local library if it is not already there. An acquisition request can often be made using the online form in each library.

7. Sometimes a coursebook can be remotely loaned

  • Some libraries lend course books elsewhere from their own collections, but most often only to their own students. So if you live in Rovaniemi and study at the University of Turku, for example, you can order a coursebook from the University of Turku through your nearest library in Rovaniemi. Don't forget to tell me you're an UTU student.

Good luck with the exam!
