25.08.2020

Explore. Experiment. Get inspired. Welcome to the UTU100 Fair of the University of Turku, organised by the Aura riverside on Friday, 4 September 2020 at 12pm–6pm. At the same time with the UTU100 Fair, the beginning of the new academic year is celebrated with the Opening Carnival organised by the University and the Student Union of the University of Turku. These outdoor events are part of the University’s centenary celebration programme.

The UTU100 Fair and the Opening Carnival start on Friday 4 September at 12pm by the Aura riverside, on the Itäinen Rantakatu street between Tuomiokirkko Bridge and Library Bridge. The programme continues until 6pm.

– In celebration of our anniversary, we open the academic year by bringing this inspiring and fun science event into the heart of the city and inviting everyone in the Turku region who are interested in science and research to join us. The stage programme includes interesting researcher interviews (in Finnish) and the interactive and informative fair stands give a great overview of the study opportunities and research at the University, says communications Director Anne Paasi from the University of Turku.

At the UTU100 Fair, you can tour the different stands and learn about research projects, discuss with researchers and try different activities. You can, for example, vote for your favourite U.S. Presidential Election candidate or see the riverside scenery in a new way through augmented reality. At the Opening Carnival stands, you can learn more about the member organisations of the Student Union and the different services of the University. All the personnel at the stands will be happy to talk with you in English.

On the UTU100 Stage of the UTU100 Fair and Opening Carnival, you can hear short presentations on current topics as well as researcher interviews on topics, such as ending up on the path of crime, Turku in the 1920s, elections in the United States and what brain scans reveal about our feelings. The stage programme will be mainly in Finnish. In addition, interactive skits (speksi) which are part of the student culture and musical performances will be seen and heard on the stage. The Teacher, Course and and Language Deed of the Year will also be revealed and awarded at the event.

The free and open-to-all outdoors event is for everyone interested in science, research and university studies.

The University closely follows the development of the coronavirus situation as well as the authorities’ instructions regarding big events and acts accordingly. In case safety precautions need to be increased or e.g. the event cancelled, it will be announced on the event website, the University's Event Calendar and the Facebook page of the event.
