Fire at Aurum on 24 September extinguished
On Thursday evening, 24 September 2026, a fire broke out in a technical facility in the Aurum building, located on Henrikinkatu and jointly used by Åbo Akademi University and the University of Turku. The fire, which was detected by the automatic fire alarm system, was quickly extinguished and caused no personal injury.
After the fire alarm, the building was evacuated. The fire department extinguished the fire.
The fire was caused by the emergency power system catching fire in the building’s technical room. The fire did not cause any smoke damage to the building, but due to odour issues, certain basement facilities, such as the gym and changing rooms, will be out of use over the weekend. Odour removal is carried out in these areas, and the aim is to have the facilities back in use by Monday. The other facilities in the Aurum building, including the Exam rooms for electronic examinations, are in use as normal.
