Game on!
Game studies is a diverse and rapidly evolving field that offers perspectives and applications for various areas of life. The library has subscribed to two new journals to meet the needs of game studies.
Journal of Sound and Music in Games (JSMG) is an online, quarterly, peer-reviewed journal focusing on the study of sound and music in games. It is the only journal dedicated exclusively to this topic. While JSMG primarily focuses on video games, research on music and sound in other forms of games, such as sports and historical games, is also featured.
Music and sounds play a central role in the gaming experience. They not only create atmosphere and deepen player immersion but also affect game dynamics and player emotions. For example, game music can increase excitement, calm the player, or even guide their actions during the game. Sound effects, on the other hand, can provide important clues about game events and the environment.
The readership of the Journal of Sound and Music in Games consists of professionals and researchers from various fields, such as media and game studies, musicology and computer science. The journal includes research articles, review articles, book and game reviews, and interviews. Additionally, JSMG occasionally publishes special issues and conference proceedings.
Journal of Gaming & Virtual Worlds (JGVW) is an international, peer-reviewed journal focusing on the study of games and virtual worlds across different platforms and genres. The journal is a significant forum for interdisciplinary discussion in the field of game studies, examining particularly the theory and criticism of games, intersections of game design and game culture, and the performative and transformative dimensions of games and virtual worlds.
The journal publishes a variety of research articles, which can be theoretical, empirical, ethnographic, creative, or pedagogical. It also accepts essays and reviews. JGVW is particularly interested in interdisciplinary studies that bring together researchers from different fields.
The journal is indexed in well-known databases such as Scopus and Web of Science’s Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), making it a respected publication in the academic world. JGVW publishes three issues per year and has been in existence since 2009.
