Finnish universities were successful in ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. In the University of Turku, the highest achievers were the Institute of Dentistry and the Department of Nursing Science.

In the ShanghaiRanking, universities are ranked in 54 subjects from five fields: natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. The ranking focused on the productivity and quality of university research, received academic recognition, and the scale of international co-operation.

From the University of Turku, several different units were ranked in the top 500. The highest achiever was the Institute of Dentistry, which was ranked as the 24th in the category of dentistry. Also previously, the Institute has received recognition as one of Europe’s and the world’s leading competence centres for dentistry.

– In practice, the ranking of the Institute of Dentistry is on the same level as before. The small drop in the ranking is trivial and most likely connected to the variation in the numbers of publications and citations between individual years. Even though our unit is small, we belong firmly to the world’s top centres of excellence, says Head of the Institute of Dentistry Pekka Vallittu.

The Department of Nursing Science of the University of Turku also became one of the top units of Finland by earning the 44th spot in the ranking. Having produced high-quality education and research for over 30 years, the Department earned the same spot in the QS Rankings by Subject in spring, too.

Head of the Department of Nursing Science Helena Leino-Kilpi highlights that the Department’s active work in promoting internationality contributed to the high spot in the ranking.

– We are very pleased and happy that the Department of Nursing Science of the University of Turku has again been rated as one of the best in the world. Already for years, the Department has aimed at promoting international co-operation, which I believe now shows in these rankings. Our staff is competent and capable of producing research and teaching on the top level both in Finnish and English. In addition, all subjects in our Department have international partners and our research is strongly based on the international strategic recommendations of the field, Leino-Kilpi says.

The success of universities in a certain subject was measured, for example, by the number of scientific publications and citations, articles published with international partners, and recognitions.

Universities in the United States were the most successful in the ranking receiving a top place in a total of 35 subjects. As for Finnish universities, the University of Helsinki received the highest number of top rankings in different subjects.

Having conducted the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy will publish another list by Shanghai in August called ARWU, which ranks the 500 best universities in the world. The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects can be found at:
