17.09.2021

The annual Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2022 provides the list of the best universities in the world in eleven disciplines. The 2022 edition of the ranking compares 1,662 universities across 99 countries and regions, making it the largest and most diverse university ranking to date.

Following the recently launched THE World University Rankings 2022 where the University of Turku ranked among top 400 universities worldwide, THE World University Rankings by Subject 2022 have now been released. On 16 September, the first rankings released were health and science subject rankings – Clinical & Health, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Psychology. Later on 6 October, rankings for Engineering and Computer Science were announced. Soon after, 13 October marked the date when rankings for Social Sciences, Business and Economics, Education, and Law were published.

In comparison to last year’s rankings, the University of Turku has significantly improved its position in Psychology (now ranked 151-175th) by roughly 50-75 positions. Additionally, the University of Turku has experienced a deterioration of around 50-100 positions in the subject of Life Sciences (now ranked 301-400th). The rankings of Clinical & Health (301-400th) as well as Physical Sciences (501-600th) have remained the same.

Just like last year, the University of Turku continues to conduct a meaningful research in Computer Science by retaining its position with the overall rank of 251-300th. The subject of Engineering, however, is not listed mainly due to lack of teaching offered in this field in the past.

Another milestone for the University of Turku is its position in Social Sciences (now ranked 201-250th), with the overall improvement of around 50 positions compared to last year. While the ranking of Business and Economics has remained the same as last year (301-400th), the ranking of Education has experienced a small decline of around 25-50 positions (now ranked 201-250th). Additionally, the University of Turku is not listed in the rankings of Law. Only Finnish university appearing in the Law rankings list for the past five years is the University of Helsinki.

Rankings of the University of Turku:

  • 301–400 Clinical & Health (#4 in Finland)
  • 301–400 Life Sciences (#4 in Finland)
  • 501–600 Physical Sciences (#6 in Finland)
