Open Call for Applications in University Research Collegia

17.02.2017

The Turku Collegium for Science and Medicine of the University of Turku is hiring five postdoctoral researchers and four senior researchers. The Turku Institute for Advanced Studies of the University of Turku is hiring five postdoctoral researchers and a director for a three-year period.

The University of Turku has two interdisciplinary research collegia: Turku Institute for Advanced Studies (TIAS) and Turku Collegium for Science and Medicine (TCSM). The purpose of the research collegia is to advance top research and to develop young researchers' careers at the same time.

The Turku Institute for Advanced Studies (TIAS) promotes top research in humanities and social sciences.  TIAS is a joint enterprise between the Faculties of Social Sciences, Humanities, Education and Law and Turku School of Economics. The disciplines represented by TIAS are arts and culture studies, history, archaeology, languages, linguistics, logopaedics, economic sciences, education, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, social politics, social work, sociology, and research methods.

TIAS has a call for five, fixed-term postdoctoral researcher positions for 1 January 2018–31 December 2020. Experience in international activities is expected from the applicants. The call for applications is open until 15 March 2017.

– One central goal of the Turku Institute for Advanced Studies is to provide an opportunity for developing as a researcher to recently graduated doctors. The three-year funding that enables a research period abroad is a significant opportunity in times when research funding is decreasing. This is also evident in that many researchers has continued as a Tenure Track assistant professor after their period in TIAS. The second goal – which is just as important – is to strengthen our interdisciplinary research and create opportunities for research that crosses the traditional boundaries between disciplines. These challenges can be met in the multidisciplinary and international TIAS research community. The decision to extensively promote the career development of young researchers is very welcome, says the Director of the Collegium, Professor Anne Kumpula.

TIAS is also looking for a director for a three-year period. The duties of the Collegium Director include developing and steering the operations and finances of the Research Collegium, responsibility for the practical work tasks, promoting the international networking of the Collegium, and expanding its funding base.

– We are looking for a person with academic merits and international networks, and who has experience in and evidence of both academic leadership and success in acquiring supplementary funding, says the Chair of TIAS Board, Professor Eija Suomela-Salmi.

The Turku Collegium for Science and Medicine (TCSM) offers a multidisciplinary, interactive research platform in natural sciences and medicine for scientists during and after the post-doc phase. The research fields of the Collegium are mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, geology, geography, medicine, biomedicine and dentistry as well as research that is related to these disciplines.

TCSM has an open call for applications for five, fixed-term positions for Postdoctoral Researchers. The fixed-term employment relationship of the selected postdoctoral researchers can start at the earliest on 1 January 2018. The call for applications is open until 15 March 2017.

– We are looking for talented and dynamic young researchers. In addition, we require mobility, which means that you cannot continue as a postdoctoral researcher in the same research group where you completed your dissertation. A Collegium position gives you a chance to research interesting topics in a new environment. During the three-year funding period, it is possible to learn new things and produce significant results, which can come in handy at a later stage of your career, says Academy Professor Sirpa Jalkanen.

In addition, TCSM has a call for applications for four senior researcher positions. The duration of the position is three years and it starts at the earliest on 1 January 2018. The call for applications is open until 18 April 2017.

– With this call, we want to offer the most promising researchers who have completed their postdoc period successfully a possibility for establishing their own research group in an environment that provides a great opportunity for multi- and interdisciplinary research, says Professor Jalkanen.
