Professor Pentti Huovinen Appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine

The Rector of the University of Turku has appointed the Professor of Bacteriology Pentti Huovinen as the new Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

​Huovinen has been the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine since 2012. He led the Department of Clinical Medicine in 2010–2011. Earlier, he worked as a Research Professor at the National Public Health Institute of Finland and the National Institute for Health and Welfare as well as a Chief Medical Officer and Chief Physician.

Huovinen has been a researcher in Harvard Medical School in the United States and carried out management training in Wharton School in Philadelphia.
Huovinen has produced approximately 400 scientific publications and texts and supervised 18 doctoral dissertations.

He actively popularises science and is an expert highly regarded by the media. Among other things, he has been a columnist in Turun Sanomat newspaper and in the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle) since the beginning of the 1990s. In 2012, the Finnish Association of Non-fiction Writers gave Huovinen the Warelius Award.

Huovinen has several positions of trust: for example, he is a member of the Committee for Public Information in Finland.

Huovinen’s period as the Dean starts on 1 August 2014 and ends 31 July 2017. The current Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Tapani Rönnemaa, retires at the beginning of August.
