Recent IB research: SME internationalization may hit a glass ceiling

SME internationalization is not always a bed of roses. With a single-case study researchers demonstrate how the internationalization of particularly family-owned SMEs can be a combination of entrepreneurial and non-entrepreneurial behavior, leading to constrained internationalization. International operations can continue for decades but international growth hits a ‘glass ceiling’ which is very difficult to overcome due to lack of strategy, relevant capabilities and international mindset.
