RefWorks Subscription Ending December 31, 2021

15.06.2021

The subscription for the RefWorks reference management programme, which has long been used at the University of Turku, expires at the end of 2021. Each RefWorks user must transfer their references to another programme before the turn of the year if they wish to keep them for later use.

For several years, the University of Turku Library has provided a RefWorks reference management programme for the University of Turku for free, which has enabled users to store the references they need. For 2022, however, the RefWorks subscription will no longer be renewed because the terms of the agreement conflict with EU data protection laws.

When?

The current RefWorks subscription of the University of Turku is valid until 31st December 2021, after which RefWorks cannot be used. Also, RefWorks does not sell individual, personal subscriptions, so each user should export their reference library into another reference management program or otherwise save them to another place well before the year 2022.

What?

In order to save references from RefWorks, it is possible to export them to another reference management program, e.g. Zotero or Mendeley, or save them in some other way. Free versions of both Zotero and Mendeley are available. For more information, instructions on how to transfer references and to use Zotero and Mendeley, see, for instance, the library reference management guide.

NB! If you have used RefWorks with a word processing program (for example, Word or Google Docs), the references and source lists of all unfinished texts will have to be redone in 2022 with another program.

How?

For advice and support, visit the website, videos and guides of the University of Turku Library. The library will start workshops in August 2021 where we advise on reference transfer and the use of Zotero or Mendeley. We will be briefing on workshops and other related issues as soon as possible.
