Register Now to the Aboagora Symposium on 23–25 August
Aboagora – Between Arts and Sciences is an annual symposium which brings together various aspects of academia, arts, and society. The event offers a forum for researchers, artists, and the public to establish new dialogues and collaborations. Registration has been extended until August 11.
The theme for this year’s Aboagora is “Becoming/Verðandi”. The Symposium is at the Sibelius Museum (Piispankatu 17, Turku) on August 23–25. Aboagora will discuss, via art and various academic disciplines, the significance of “becoming,” the idea of incompleteness and being in the making with reference to humanist, scientific, economic, and social aspects. Are there any unchangeable, eternal and essential laws or patterns behind the chaos of our contemporary times? Or is the longing for such universal models just a reverie?
The event consists of keynote lectures, workshops, and diverse artistic interventions. The keynote lectures are free of charge and open to the public. The keynote speakers are molecular biologist Howy Jacobs (University of Helsinki, University of Tampere), economists Pierre Guillet de Monthoux (Copenhagen Business School) and Jenny Helin (Uppsala University), and author Maria Turtschaninoff.
Registered participants will have access to all of the symposium presentations and will also be offered coffee/tea during breaks and a Closing Reception on Friday, August 25. In the years 2016-2018, Aboagora will build a thematic trilogy under the title "The Threads of Fate." The title refers to Old Norse mythology and characters called Norns, who rule the destinies of both gods and humans. The three most important Norns were Urðr (fate), Verðandi (becoming) and Skuld (burden), and each Norn serves as a point of entrance to the Aboagora events of 2016–2018.
Aboagora is organised by the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University, the Åbo Akademi University Foundation, and the Donner Institute for Research in Religious and Cultural History.
