The 2014 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, physicist Stefan Hell, visited the University of Turku on 13 June 2025 and gave a speech at a mini-symposium on the future of imaging.

Professor Stefan Hell was the keynote speaker at the Future of Imaging mini-symposium held in honour of his visit to Biocity on Friday, 13 June 2025. Professor Hell, who conducted his research at the University of Turku in the 1990s, began his speech by highlighting that he was speaking in a place of personal importance to him.

“This place is important to me. Many things would not have happened without my time here," Professor Hell said.

In his keynote speech, Hell focused in particular on MINFLUX, a super-resolution light microscopy method.

“MINFLUX will play a key role in the future,” Hell predicted.

In addition to Hell's keynote speech, the mini-symposium featured short presentations on research projects by Doctoral Researcher Anna-Mari Haapanen-Saaristo and master's degree students Fatima Mohammad Amin, Ramish Bibi and Lakmini Bandara. The event also featured speeches by Professor Jan Kaslin and Academy Research Fellow Mueez U-Din. The symposium ended with a panel discussion on how the rapid development of artificial intelligence is changing imaging.
