The University of Turku Maintained Its Strong Position in the Shanghai List

The University of Turku is among the best four hundred in the ranking list of the world’s top universities. In life and environmental sciences, the university is among the best two hundred.

​The worldwide Academic Ranking of World Universities list was published on August 8. As last year, the University of Turku was ranked in the position between 301 and 400.

The University of Turku succeeded especially well in the Life category, where the fields of biology and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, microbiology, immunology, neuroscience, ecology, environmental science and agronomy were evaluated. The position of the university in this category was the same as last year, between 151 and 200.

Rector Kalervo Väänänen is pleased with the achieved position of the university.

- It is especially positive that we have established our position in the Life category, Väänänen states.

Besides the University of Turku, four Finnish universities achieved a position among the best 500. The only Finnish university ranked among the best 100 was the University of Helsinki, at position 76. The University of Oulu was in the position between 301 and 400. University of Eastern Finland and University of Jyväskylä were ranked between 401 and 500.

No fewer than eight out of ten top positions went to universities from the United States. From the European universities, two were ranked among the best ten: Cambridge (5.) and Oxford (10.).

The ranking is done yearly by the Jiao Tong University, which own position was between 151 and 200 this year. The so called Shanghai list has been published since 2003.

There are over 10 000 universities in the word.
