The 2023 shipping company barometer published - after a difficult 2023, shipping companies anticipate better

The results of the 2023 barometer clearly show intensified inflation and the resulting increased interest rate, as well as other international and Finnish economic slowdowns. After two positive years, the barometer for 2023 is clearly negative as a whole. For the year 2024, the barometer, on the other hand, expects a positive development. The annual shipping industry barometer was prepared by the research group of the University of Turku School of Economics under the leadership of assistant professor Tomi Solakivi.

Computational biology and bioinformatics are driving this transformation, helping researchers analyse vast amounts of biological data. European Conference on Computational Biology (ECCB) is Europe’s main event in computational biology and bioinformatics this year, bringing 600–800 experts to Turku, Finland, on 16–20 September 2024.

Johanna Ivaska and Lauri Nummenmaa receive €2.5 million in EU funding for cancer research and research in negative emotions

University of Turku Professors Johanna Ivaska and Lauri Nummenmaa have received significant research funding from the European Research Council ERC. Ivaska received funding for a project that aims to discover how the biological limits of a healthy body influence cancer progression. Nummenmaa’s project examines the link between a person’s negative emotions and their physical well-being.

University of Turku most popular university in Finland in spring's second joint application round

The University of Turku was the most popular university in this spring’s second joint application round for the Finnish-language degree programmes which ended on 27 March 2024. The total number of applicants to the University's Finnish-language degree programmes was 31,824, which is also the highest number of applicants ever to the University of Turku. The previous applicant record from 2021 (31,511) was broken in the last hour of the application round.

At the joint Academic Day of the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University on 22 March 2024, Antti Hakanen, the Docent of Clinical Microbiology at the University of Turku and the Chief of Department at Tyks Laboratories of the Wellbeing Services County of Southwest Finland, was presented with the Docent of the Year recognition.
