Olli-Pekka Heinonen, Director General of the International Baccalaureate Organization, and Martin Thrupp, Professor at New Zealand's Univeristy of Waikato, will give their honorary doctoral lectures at the end of My. The title of Heinonen's lecture is "What have I learned in 30 years about educational reforms?" and the title of Thrupp's presentation is "Education academics in small countries: Comparing notes between New Zealand and Finland". Researchers from the University of Turku are developing a new hackmanite-based dosimeter and passive detectors for the International Space Station, intended to be used to measure the radiation dose uptake of materials during space flights. The year-long research project is funded by the European Space Agency, ESA.

Using the telescopes of the MAGIC collaboration, scientists have detected very-high-energy gamma rays from the nova eruption of the RS Ophiuchi recurrent nova on the Milky Way.  The measured radiation is up to one hundred billion times more energetic than visible light. This is the first time such intense gamma rays have been observed from a nova. The observations provide new insights into the role of nova eruptions as sources of the mysterious cosmic rays.

The University of Turku offers higher education students who have fled to Finland from Ukraine an opportunity to complete free studies from among a diverse course selection. Study rights for non-degree studies offered by the faculties will be granted mainly from autumn semester onwards. In addition to non-degree studies, the Ukrainian students may also complete studies at the Open University free of charge.

The application round to Finnish-language degree programmes in Finnish universities ended on 30 March 2022. For the first time, the University of Turku was the most popular higher education institution in Finland in the number of applicants. Altogether 29,504 prospective students applied to the University of Turku.

Former Chancellor and Professor of Political Science at the University of Turku Jaakko Nousiainen has passed away at the age of 90. Nousiainen started in 1963 as the first permanent professor in political science at the University of Turku. He led the development of the Turku school in political science, centered around the research of political institutions.
