Research

I’m a social scientist focusing on issues of everyday surveillance; particularly focusing on social, cultural and individual effects of constant gathering of personal information.
My previous research, particularly my doctoral dissertation, examined the ways in which people monitor their surroundings and each other using visual surveillance equipment, such as web cameras and surveillance cameras connected online. My current research project examines subjective experiences of being under surveillance, with a focus on analyzing surveillance-critical art and examining perceptions of surveillance and privacy among young people.
