Biography

Tomi Westerlund is a Professor of Robotics and Autonomous Systems. He leads the Turku Intelligent Embedded and Robotic Systems Research Group. His current research interest is in multi-robot systems, autonomous robots and edge computing. More specifically, the areas of interest are digital twins, industrial IoT, smart cities, and, in particular, unmanned autonomous vehicles (aerial, ground and surface) and (co-)robots. In all these application areas, the core research interests are multi-robot systems, interoperability, fog/edge computing, distributed ledger technologies, sensor fusion and edge AI. He is a senior member of IEEE.

Prof Westerlund is the head of the Double Degree Master’s Programme in ICT between Fudan University (Shanghai, China) and the University of Turku as well as the EIT Digital Embedded Systems programme at the University of Turku as well as the head of the international Master’s degree programme in ICT Smart Systems. In these programmes, he actively takes part in teaching also.
